Egypt, summer 1967. Ahmed receives a letter from Austria: Liz has replied to his ad seeking a pen pal. The two begin a long-distance friendship that Ahmed’s relatives view with suspicion. From that summer on, Ahmed’s efforts to become a pianist, despite his modest background, begin to bear fruit, with Liz urging him toward a goal that seems out of reach: a public concert. Together, with this shared dream always in mind, Ahmed and Liz will live through war, family joys, opposition and tragedy, failures and triumphs that will shake Egypt through the 1980s.
